Post 32: How To Grow & Care For An Avocado Tree At Home.

I love my Avocados trees, they are living art and they grow very fast. Growing your own Avocado is simple and a fun thing to do with your kids, they will love to watch it grow!

Now I am one of those people who finds a seed and has to plant it! It would be a pity to just toss it out. Here are some other fun things that you can grow from produce: Lemons, apples, oranges, limes, grapefruits, mangos the list goes on! But my all-time favorite has to be the avocado because it grows so fast!

Adoro le mie piante di Avocado, sono arte in vita, e crescono molto velocemente. Far crescere una pianta di Avocado è qualcosa di semplice e divertente da poter fare insieme ai vostri figli: saranno felici di vederle crescere!

Adesso sono diventata una di quelle persone che quando trova un seme deve piantarlo! Sarebbe un peccato buttarlo via. Ecco qualche altra pianta divertente da far crescere: limoni, mele, arance, lime, pompelmo, mango e la lista continua! Ma la mia favorita è sempre stata l’avocado perchè cresce davvero rapidamente!

This avocado plant is not even 1 year old!

Here's how:

First remove the pit/seed  from inside an avocado, rinse and dry.
(Be sure to use room temperature water or you risk shock to the seed.)

Option 1:
Step 1:

Put seed into the soil with the pointed end faced down (leave top of seed slightly exposed) and wait for it to sprout, making sure the soil is watered like any normal plant. This method will take longer but requires less maintenance.

Step 2:

Put in a warm, half sun or shaded place, with no drafts or sudden temperature changes. Do not over water.

Option 2:
Step 1:

Place 3 tooth picks equally spaced around the seed, so that it can be suspended over a glass of water. (The water should only cover the bottom half of the pit otherwise the seed will rot.)

Step 2:

Put in a warm place, making sure to maintain the water level. Replace the water if it turns colour / or better yet get a bubbler which will keep the water moving and prevent algae.

Step 3:

In roughly 2-6 weeks, the roots and a stem will sprout from the seed.

Step 4:

At this point if you would like a small bushy plant cut the stem to encourage new growth and off shoots.

Step 5:

Once the plant has it’s first leaves it is time to transplant. Move the plant into a pot with loose soil. ( I mixed sandy and regular garden soil.) Remember to leave the top half of the pit sticking out of the soil.

Put plant in a warm, half sun or shaded place, with no drafts or sudden temperature changes. Do not over water. Avocados require frequent, light watering and keep it in a sunny place to encourage growth. You will know you are not watering enough if it starts wilting.

Ecco come fare:

Rimuovete il seme dall’interno di un avocado, lavatelo e asciugatelo (assicuratevi di usare acqua a temperature ambiente o rischierete uno shock termico per il seme).

Opzione 1:

Passo 1: Interrate il seme in un vaso con la parte appuntita orientata verso il basso (lasciate la parte superiore leggermente fuori dalla terra), annaffiate come le altre piante normali (dipende dal periodo dell’anno) e aspettate che inizi a germogliare. Con questo metodo serve più tempo ma è richiesto meno lavoro.

Passo 2: Una volta germogliato, non annaffiate eccessivamente.

Opzione 2:

Passo 1: Posizionate 3 stuzzicadenti intorno al seme, egualmente distanziati fra loro, in modo da sospendere il seme al di sopra di un bicchiere pieno d’acqua (l’acqua dovrebbe coprire soltanto la metà inferiore del seme altrimenti marcisce).

Passo 2: Lasciate il bicchiere in un luogo caldo e mantenete costante il livello dell’acqua. Sostituite l’acqua se diventa scura oppure (meglio) utilizzate una pompa d’aria per ossigenare l’acqua e mantenerla limpida.

Passo 3: In circa 2-6 settimane radici e stelo germoglieranno dal seme.

Passo 4: A questo punto se volete una pianta bassa e folta tagliate lo stelo dove volete ottenere nuovi germogli.

Passo 5: Quando la pianta ha messo le prime foglie è ora di travasarla. Invasate usando terra soffice (io mescolo terra sabbiosa e terra normale da giardinaggio). Ricordate di lasciare la metà superiore del seme fuori dalla terra.

Posizionate il vaso con la pianta che avete ottenuto in un luogo caldo, luminoso ma lontano dalla luce diretta del sole, evitando spifferi, correnti d’aria e sbalzi di temperatura. Non annaffiate eccessivamente. L’Avocado richiede poca acqua ma con annaffiature frequenti. Un luogo molto luminoso facilita la crescita. Saprete che non state annaffiando a sufficienza quando le foglie inizieranno ad abbassarsi.

Tips:

Avocados do not like to be moved around or turned.
Over watering will cause root rot.
Fertilize lightly every year for best results.
Do not leave your avocado by a furnace or air conditioning vent.
Cut off yellowing leaves to encourage new growth.
Will not support temperatures under 0 degrees Celsius.

Suggerimenti:

All’Avocado non piace essere spostato o girato.
Un’annaffiatura eccessiva farà marcire le radici.
Usate un fertilizzante leggero una volta all’anno per il migliore risultato.
Non lasciate l’Avocado vicino a sorgenti di calore o a griglie di ventilazione.
Tagliate le foglie che ingialliscono per facilitare la crescita.
La pianta non sopporta temperature al di sotto di 0°C

Keep in mind that Avocados are fun to start but difficult to keep alive. They grow naturally in Mexico and other warmer regions of the globe.
